Tinubu Expands CNG Initiative to Include Electric Vehicles

President Tinubu has approved the expansion of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PiCNG) to include electric vehicles, rebranding it the Presidential Initiative on CNG and Electric Vehicles (PiCNG & EV) — a move aimed at promoting affordable transportation, strengthening energy security, and accelerating Nigeria's shift to cleaner fuel.

The announcement followed a March 2026 directive ordering the deployment of roughly 100,000 vehicle conversion kits nationwide, extending access to CNG as a cheaper, cleaner alternative to petrol for commercial and private transport.

So far, the initiative has delivered over 200 conversion centres and 90 refuelling stations across 23 states, alongside 655 CNG buses, 5,123 CNG tricycles, and 40 electric buses deployed into the national transport network.

To ease the cost of conversion for ordinary Nigerians, the federal government has partnered with the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation, Moniepoint Microfinance Bank, and the National Credit Guarantee Company to offer structured consumer credit — alongside a parallel push to build CNG ecosystems, including buses and training centres, across 20 universities.
